I've played the other way, but I think the overcharge skills and effects are more versatile. For combat, I prefer using overcharge, so getting the early option to cut cells off of his pistols is key. He's at his best I think, with wrangling extra actions and cards using preparation. I don't worry too much about rigging the coin, since you can change out coins to suit almost any taste. If you play negotiation-heavy, it ramps up quickly in power. Also, regardless of allegiance, I take "The list" as his starting item. For Rook on negotiation, I find that his hostility game is strong, especially if you can gain grafts that stack damage or defense onto his arguments. I like Rook as well, and I had the good fortune to actually succeed with my first run with him! Sal is good too, of course, but I can't help but feel that she's a little bland. He's an asshole, but he's funny and I like his mechanics. Of all the three characters I think Smith is my favourite. And in Combat it would be focusing on one particular combat style, like choosing between going for a combo build or a bleed build for Sal. For Negotiation that could be focusing on Hostility cards over Diplomacy cards. Stuff like you should focus on one mechanic or type of card insteading of spreading yourself thin. It'll cost double (you're paying for two drinks, after all) but you'll improve your relationship with that NPC. The combat and negotiations use basically the same system and so once I figured out one of them I also knew how to handle the other. For the most part I think I've got a handle on things although the game is quite challenging! You need pretty much every edge that you can give yourself. I'm still in my first run with Sal, the bounty hunter, and I'm still figuring things out. In fact I had pretty much forgotten about the game until I hopped onto Steam yesterday and saw that the full release had dropped! A few clicks later and I was hooked. However, I generally avoid games that are in Early Access and so I've been waiting. The sci-fi western aesthetics of Griftlands was cool and the deckbuilding mechanics looked really interesting. When I heard that they had a new game in development I could feel the hype start to build. and Oxygen Not Included to both ultimately be a bit too stressful for me, I enjoyed my time with them. Don't Starve is still one of my favorites, for example. Although I never played the Shank games I've played pretty much everything else they've put out.
